Ottoman Lace

LEVANT’s lace collection takes arabesques and Mediterranean motifs to lace, emulating the lace finery of the Ottoman courts that became popular during the Franco-Ottoman alliance. For two centuries, exchange between the Valois and the Ottomans thrived, shaping the material culture of both states. French interest in Ottoman aesthetics reached its height in the 17th century, with dignitaries regularly painted in ‘turquerie’ fashion, while the Ottomans coveted and developed lacemaking in the style of French ateliers. LEVANT’s lace collection is handmade in a historic atelier in Istanbul that specializes in the preservation of Turkish craft, a legacy with roots that go back to this historic alliance.
