For two centuries, exchange between the Valois and the Ottomans thrived, shaping the material culture of both states. French interest in Ottoman aesthetics reached its height in the 17th century, with dignitaries regularly painted in ‘turquerie’ fashion, while the Ottomans coveted and developed lacemaking in the style of French ateliers.
